Bilal ibn Rabah (581 - 641), companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the first muezzin. He was born in Mecca as the child of an Ethiopian slave family. His mother’s name was Hamâme, and his father’s name was Rebah.
He was among the first to embrace Islam and one of the first seven people to openly declare it.It is narrated that when Umayya ibn Khalaf heard that his slave Bilal had converted to Islam, he resorted to severe torture to dissuade him. It is said that Bilal’s resistance in the face of torture greatly impressed the Meccan polytheists.
Abu Bakr, deeply distressed by Umayya ibn Khalaf’s torture of Bilal, told him to stop this torture. He said: "It is you who corrupted his morals; it is none other than you who drove him away from us." Then Abu Bakr answered him: There is someone with me who is stronger and stronger than this slave of yours. And it is also from your religion. If you want, take that and give this to me. Umayya b. Halef this.
